The summer months are perfect for Florida residents to head out on an international travel adventure. We see a big spike in travel overseas during this time of the year, requiring travelers to consider essential vaccinations and keep themselves healthy while traveling. Travel can expose individuals to infectious diseases not common in the United States. Today we’re going to share our top tips for staying healthy while exploring the world this year.
Why Travel Vaccinations Matter
Traveling to different regions poses varying health risks. If you are heading to Africa to go on safari, there’s a higher risk of yellow fever in that part of the world. For travelers who are visiting Asia to tick off a bucket-list destination, typhoid is often more of a concern. Many vaccines require time to become fully effective, making early planning critical if you are traveling overseas in the next few months. Protecting both your personal health and preventing the spread of diseases upon return ensures that you play your part in being a responsible traveler while still enjoying adventures you’ll remember for years to come. As soon as you book your next overseas trip, we encourage you to research the travel vaccinations for that region immediately so you can book appointments ahead of time and avoid any last-minute panics.
Common Travel Vaccinations by Region
The essential vaccines you will need will vary based on the region and the countries you are visiting. The length of your visit and the activities you are planning may also play a role in which vaccines you will need. These are some of the most common vaccinations necessary for popular travel destinations:
- Central & South America – Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Yellow Fever; Malaria and Rabies (for certain areas)
- Africa – Yellow Fever (required in some countries), Meningococcal, Hepatitis A & B, and Polio booster. Malaria is often recommended.
- Asia – Japanese Encephalitis, Typhoid, Hepatitis A & B, and Rabies (in rural areas or for extended travel)
- Europe – Lower risk, but check for routine vaccines and updates (MMR, Tdap, flu, pneumonia, and COVID-19)
- Middle East – Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, Polio, and Meningococcal (especially for Hajj travel)
When to Schedule Your Travel Health Appointment
To properly prepare for your trip abroad, you should book an appointment with a specialist four to six weeks before travel. An infectious disease physician can assess personal risk factors for your trip, including your age, medical history, and duration of travel. During this appointment, you can discuss any health and safety concerns based on the unique trip itinerary you have planned.
Here at the IDATB Travelers Clinic, we offer travel consultation services that can help you decide what you will need when traveling to a certain part of the world. We offer both pre-travel counseling and post-travel evaluations to ensure you can return to your normal everyday routine without any concerns. As well as offering advice about vaccinations, we can discuss preventive measures for malaria and mosquito-borne illnesses and write prescriptions for recommended medications, including antimalarials.
Additional Health Tips for International Travel
After booking an appointment to see a member of our team and receive the necessary vaccinations for your travel destination, you need to make other preparations to ensure you stay safe and healthy on your trip. We always recommend that you pack a travel health kit, no matter where you are traveling. This should include prescriptions, antidiarrheals, insect repellent, and hand sanitizer. Pack a basic first aid kit if you are going to be going on a lot of independent days out or active adventures. Having simple items like band aids on hand will stop you from having to ask for these items in unfamiliar pharmacies, where it may be hard to communicate what you are concerned about in another language.
When you are away from home, practice good food and water safety. Drink carbonated bottled water where necessary, and avoid raw or undercooked foods in high-risk areas. If you have food allergies, make sure you research in advance how to explain this in the local language or review menus online to find restaurants with good reviews that may be suitable for your dietary needs. Use DEET-based repellent and wear long sleeves in areas where mosquito-borne illnesses are a concern. If you are camping or spending extended time outdoors, ensure you pack the protection you need to keep your travel party safe and comfortable. In high-traffic airports and tourist sites, practice safe hygiene and minimize contact with other people where possible to reduce the chance of illness.
COVID-19 and Other Current Considerations
No matter where you travel this year, you need to stay updated on travel advisories and entry requirements for the countries you plan to visit. COVID-19 is still a concern in many countries, so consider getting a COVID booster if eligible and check for country-specific testing and vaccination rules. Remember that flus spikes are opposite in the different hemispheres, so consider flu vaccines to offer yourself an extra layer of protection when traveling. The more you can keep informed about the destination you are visiting and current health risks, the easier it will be to prepare for your trip and pack extra protection or medication. Look up information about local doctors and pharmacies ahead of time in case you need these services when overseas.
Traveling overseas is an incredible way to enhance your appreciation of our world and experience new cultures and destinations for yourself. It’s something we recommend to everyone and encourage you to start thinking about what bucket-list destination you want to visit next. If you are hoping to travel abroad this summer, we recommend you start researching and planning for your trip as soon as possible. The more prepared you are before you start to travel, the easier it will be to relax and enjoy your destination when you arrive.
