History of Norovirus

Norovirus was first identified in 1968 after an outbreak at an elementary school in Norwalk, Ohio. Dr. Albert Z. Kapikian, a virologist at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), discovered the virus using immune electron microscopy. Since then, Norovirus has been recognized as one of the leading causes of gastroenteritis worldwide.

Floridians, therefore, need to be well-informed about Norovirus to safeguard themselves, their families, and their communities.

 

Norovirus Outbreaks in Florida: Common Causes

  1. Cruise Ships: Florida is a hub for the cruise industry, with major ports in cities like Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Tampa. Cruise ships are known for their confined spaces and shared facilities, which can create the perfect environment for Norovirus to spread. Ensuring good hygiene and following cruise ship guidelines can help minimize the risk of infection.
  2. Schools and Childcare Facilities: Outbreaks of Norovirus can easily occur in schools and childcare centers, where children are in close contact and hygiene practices may not always be ideal. Encourage children to practice good handwashing techniques and notify the school or childcare center if your child is experiencing symptoms of Norovirus.

  5. Over-the-counter medications: Anti-diarrheal and antiemetic medications may relieve symptoms, but consult with a healthcare professional before using them, as they may not be appropriate in all cases.

 

Preventing the Spread of Norovirus

 

Prevention is critical in controlling the spread of Norovirus. Dr. Jan Vinjé emphasizes the importance of proper hygiene: “The most effective way to prevent Norovirus transmission is through regular and thorough handwashing with soap and water, particularly after using the bathroom and before preparing or handling food.”

 

Other preventive measures include:

  1. Disinfecting contaminated surfaces with a bleach-based solution
  2. Promptly washing soiled clothing and linens
  3. Avoiding the preparation of food while ill or for at least 48 hours after symptoms have subsided
  4. Properly cooking shellfish to kill any potential viral particles
