NTM (nontuberculous mycobacteria) lung disease is an infection caused by a group of bacteria that include Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC), among others.
NTM organisms are common in the environment — found in soil, water, and dust — and most of the time, they cause no harm.
However, they can cause infection in certain groups with increased risk factors, such as people living with chronic lung diseases including bronchiectasis, emphysema, and COPD.
Symptoms and Risks
NTM infection is not contagious, but it can still cause serious and long-term effects.
Common symptoms may include:
- Persistent or chronic cough
- Fatigue or weakness
- Shortness of breath
- Weight loss or loss of appetite
- Recurring lung infections
Without treatment, lung damage can worsen over time, leading to scarring and decreased lung function.

NTM lung disease can be treated, though it often requires a combination of antibiotics over an extended period.
